What it is

The first hour matters more than the eventual merits

A complaint touching trans inclusion arrives and the clock starts. How it is handled in the first hour often matters more than its eventual merits: route it wrongly, sit on it, or treat a serious matter casually, and the handling becomes the second complaint.

What it does. You paste the complaint or challenge and say where it came from — a staff member, a parent or carer, a trustee or board member, a member of the public, the media, or anonymously — and what relationship the person has with you: a current service user or employee, a former one, none at all, or unclear because they have not said. You can flag whether they have complained before, which is itself a triage signal, since repeated contact may need a different routing path. Setting your sector tailors the triage to that sector's duties and tone.

What you get. A classification, the triage signals that help you route and handle it fairly, and a recommended response approach. Above all, consistency — the same complaint triaged the same way whoever receives it, which is most of what makes the handling defensible whatever the outcome turns out to be. Nothing is stored unless you save it.

Who uses it. HR and employee relations teams. Line managers who have just been told something and are not sure what they have been told. Anyone who is the first person a complaint lands on.

Where it fits. The Preventative Duty and Support Mechanisms checks surface the need for a route people can actually find. It hands off to Challenge Response when the answer needs wording, and to Defensibility when the decision underneath the complaint is the thing being tested. This is triage, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Five things people ask before they start

What do I need to have ready before I start?

The complaint or challenge text, where it came from (a staff member, a parent or carer, a trustee or board member, a member of the public, the media, or anonymously), and the person's relationship to you. You can also flag whether they have complained before, and setting your sector tailors the triage.

Is my data private, and is it used to train AI?

Your data is encrypted, private to your account, and held in DocuVault. It is not used to train AI models.

Does this give me legal advice?

No. This is triage, not legal advice. For a specific legal situation or a live challenge, consult a solicitor.

Can I export or share what it produces?

A classification, the triage signals that help you route and handle it fairly, and a recommended response approach. Nothing is stored unless you save it.

How long does it take, and can I run it again?

The page does not state a timing. You can rerun it or return to it, and nothing is stored unless you save it.
